FEEDING YOUR NEW PUPPY

from www.dogbreedinfo.com

The following table will help in determining the feeding schedule for your new baby.

8 weeks

Feed your puppy twice a day.  Choose a puppy food that provides the appropriate balance of nutrients your puppy needs. Be sure they are getting the right amount of protein and calcium, and the proper amount of calories. Check the label to determine if you are feeding your puppy a balanced diet. Meat should be the first ingredient on the label.

3 to 6 months

Your puppy will be teething. He may become a finicky eater or lose his appetite. Keep feeding him nutritious food twice a day. If he has an upset stomach for more than one or two days, take him to the veterinarian.

6 months to 1 year

Your puppy may look all grown up but he is still a puppy. He should still be fed puppy food for the added nutrition. Feed him the puppy food for the first year. In some larger breeds even into the second year. Ask your veterinarian when you should switch to adult food. Make sure the adult food you switch to is still a balanced diet with the first ingredient being meat.

8 to 9 months

Feeding can be reduced to once a day.

1 year

About the age when pups should be switched to adult food. Be sure to ask your veterinarian when to switch your dog. Age may vary depending on the size of the dog.

VACCINATIONS

  • At 2 weeks of age, we start worming our puppies bi-weekly.
  • At 4 weeks old, we give a Neopar vaccination to prevent Parvo.
  • At 6 weeks of age, we give a 5-way puppy vaccination, using Vanguard Plus 5.
  • At 7 weeks old, we give Bordatella to prevent Kennel Cough.
  • At 8 weeks, we give another 5 way puppy vaccination.

Your puppy will also need another 5-way puppy vaccination.  A rabies shot will also be needed if you receive your puppy prior to 12 weeks of age.  Consult your veterinarian as to what age they recommend these be administered.

At 6 weeks of age, our puppies are introduced to puppy food.  At 6 1/2 to 7 weeks of age, we begin to wean our puppies from their mama.  They spend half of their day without mama and then mama is placed back with her pups for the other half of the day, for 7 days.  This helps them to get accustomed to being away from her, yet not all at once.  During weaning time, the puppies are introduced to potty training by utilizing a doggy door.

GROOMING

We get asked about what products we use on our puppies that make them smell so good.  We use the following product:

The crème rinse penetrates your pet’s coat and leaves a long-lasting fragrance clinging to the hair for up to two weeks. It includes aloe vera to soothe the skin and extra conditioners to make the coat shiny, manageable and free of mats and tangles.
